The Marquess of Lansdowne to Sir E. Satow.

(No. 63.) Sir,

Foreign Office, March 1, 1904. WITH reference to my despatch No. 21 of the 27th January last, relative to the protection of British trade-marks in China, I transmit to you a copy of a letter from the Board of Trade, concurring in the views expressed in your despatch No. 392 of the 18th November, as to the importance of arrangements for the mutual protection of trade-marks being concluded with the Powers having Treaties with China.

As stated in my despatch No. 21 of the 27th ultimo, arrangements have already been concluded with France and Germany, as well as with Italy, on the subject.

I request that you will report whether, in your opinion, it would be advisable that any, and, if so, which, of the Powers with whom no such arrangement at present exists should be approached with a view to the conclusion of similar agreements.

I am, &c.

(Signed)

LANSDOWNE.
